Guy Totaro
Gaetano Totaro is a performing “Jack of all Trades.” As an Actor, Narrator, Character Model, Musician, Clown, Magician and Fire Artist he really puts the TALENT back into “TARENTO”! A native of Southern California, Gaetano “Guy” Totaro received his BA in Acting/Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University in 1989. There, he was introduced to the Italian physical comedy style Commedia dell’ Arte. He continued his Acting and Commedia training as an apprentice with the award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe and performed with the Troupe on tour across the United States. Gaetano developed his Vaudeville Clown character “Uncle Guido“ on the streets of San Francisco and at the world famous Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey’s Clown College (class of 1992). 1993 unexpectedly took Gaetano to Japan where, for 5 years, he free-lanced as a Variety Entertainer, Actor, Narrator, Print Model. Gaetano returned to Los Angeles in 1998 where he had numerous roles in TV commercials, stage shows, and live events.
The following year, he trained and performed with a Commedia dell Arte Troupe at the newly opened Venetian Resort Hotel in Las Vegas. In 2005, Gaetano returned to Tokyo and rapidly became one of the busiest foreign entertainers in town. He’s had many high profile roles in commercials, music videos as a voice actor and is most proud to have been Suntory’s Super Hero / Spokes-Model, “Mr CC Lemon”, “Mr Clark” on Benesse’s “World Wide Kids” DVD series and the co-host of NHK Radio’s “Kiso Eigo 3” for 2 years. The 3/11 earthquake and tsunami devastated the North Easter Tohoku region of Japan and changed the course of Guy’s life.
In the aftermath of the disaster, children were especially susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder issues. Guy created the Niko Niko Taishi Smile Ambassadors program to provide care and support throughout the affected region. He reached out to children, teachers, care givers, families and communities with a dynamic, highly interactive and therapeutic program. Kids of all ages need to process and let go of their stress, frustrations and grief in a safe and fun environment. It is commonly known that “laughter is the best medicine”. It boosts the immune system, increases body oxygen levels and releases endorphins and serotonin in the brain. The Smile Ambassadors shows and workshops promote healing by sharing joy, stimulating imagination and building confidence and self-respect. In the 5 years following the Tohoku disaster, Guy visited 163 locations and interacted with over 12,000 affected children. The goal of the ongoing program is to continue to offer smiles, laughter and love to impacted children, teachers and communities and to help other populations in need at orphanages, hospitals and women’s shelters. Gaetano pursues his dream of, “Changing the world, one smile at a time” by performing his “Supa-Gaijin” Family Variety Comedy Show at festivals, events and private parties all over Japan and through “Niko Niko Taishi The Smile Ambassadors” his children’s charity program that was started after the 3/11 tsunami that devastated North Eastern Japan.
